Are you an immigrant in America? What’s your story? In this episode of Bumping gums, we’ll be hearing Kim’s immigrant story.
Kim was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Spanish Town the original capital of Jamaica. Kim lived on a sugar plantation. At the Age of six, Kim’s father passed away right next to her, and that is when the trauma began. After a year, Kim and her family were chased out of the plantation. Her mom did her best to survive in Jamaica and decided to go to the US for greener pastures. Kim was left with her sister when her mom left.
After a few years, Kim’s sister was tired of taking care of her and asked her mom to take Kim to America. Kim’s mom had no option other than to fly her to America. When Kim first got to the US, her mom lived in a friend’s basement with another family. She had rented a room which was a big culture shock for Kim!
A few days after Kim’s arrival in the US, her mom decided to enroll her in school. Luckily enough, Kim was able to enroll in a public school. When Kim joined the school, she endured bullying because of her accent and body size. She worked hard to get rid of her Caribbean accent, but things didn’t get easier for her. She even decided to downplay her intelligence just to fit in.
